What Does it Mean to Be a Web Designer Today?

In 2014 – for a person or company to get a professional looking website doesn't necessarily mean they have to hire a web designer. WordPress has become such a popular platform now that many people don't even consider having a website that isn't built on the platform.

There are countless WordPress themes out there to suit any type of business – the vast majority of them available for a fraction of the cost of hiring a web designer. Obviously this creates quite a dilemma for any budding web designers out there who want to make a decent living.

What Value do Web Designers Have in the Age of CMS?

With so many people now choosing to opt for a WordPress site rather than hiring a designer to build their site from scratch – where does this leave web designers? Well for one thing, it's abundantly clear now that web designers can no longer solely rely of basic coding skill such as HTML and CSS.

To be a web designer in 2014, being able to modify and create WordPress themes is a must. Often people will purchase a WordPress theme and need helping setting it up or modifying it – so to make yourself as valuable as possible, you should be extremely familiar with the platform.

That said, there are still a good deal of traditional websites that don't use WordPress. However these are becoming less and less. This isn't just because end users prefer WordPress for its simplicity but also web designers too. Using WordPress makes it infinitely easier for web designers to “train” their clients to use their site and cuts out a good deal of time in follow-up support.

What Does the Future Hold for Web Designers?

There's no doubt that CMS (Content Management Systems) such as WordPress have greatly changed the role of web designers today. In fact many talented designers have now decided to focus solely on creating their own WordPress themes since there's so much money to be made from it.

The truth is however, that whilst there are endless themes for WordPress and many WYSIWYG website builders like Squarespace, they are simply not a replacement for a truly skilled web designer. Many businesses want a completely bespoke website that doesn't look like anything else out there. This is where designers at the top of their game make their money.

Whilst web designers are always going to be needed – just like any other form of internet career – to be truly successful requires web designers to adapt quickly to changes in the market and take advantage of them.
